Indwelling Catheter (IDC) Care

Course Overview

This module covers the safe insertion, maintenance, and troubleshooting of indwelling urinary catheters, in line with infection control and patient dignity standards used in Singapore healthcare settings.

Course Objectives

• Perform aseptic IDC insertion using correct technique and sizing
• Maintain a closed urinary drainage system to minimise infection risk
• Recognise and respond to common complications (blockage, leakage, infection signs)
• Document care accurately per clinical standards

Course Outline

• Indications and contraindications for IDC
• Aseptic insertion technique (demonstration + supervised practice)
• Catheter care and maintenance routines
• Troubleshooting: blockages, bypassing, accidental removal
• Infection prevention and catheter-associated UTI (CAUTI) reduction
• Documentation and escalation protocols

Target Audience

Registered nurses, enrolled nurses, and caregivers providing home or facility-based catheter care who require a refresher or foundational competency sign-off.

Certification

Participants who complete the module and pass the practical competency assessment receive a Nurse360 Certificate of Competency in IDC Care.
